Il ne faudrait pas grand chose pour que cela change.

"Ensemble contre la Gynophobie" is an association chaired by Lisa Azuelos, whose aim is to implement the term gynophobia throughout the world, which will be used to qualify all types of violence against women. The association’s mission is also to inform people on all the problematics linked to gynophobia, through fims, books, conferences and advocacy activities ensuring that existing laws are enforced and that mentalities evolve. The emergence of this word will not create a new battle but just structure an ancient struggle so that one day we can finally be part of a new humanity.

Like the words « racism » or « antisemitism » , the term « gynophobia » could denounce what is no longer acceptable in our day and age and thus neutrally, without having to stigmatize a gender, culture or religion. Half of humanity must cease having to be a minority for the good of all.

History

The Organization "Ensemble Contre La Gynophobie"

is born from this stark observation: Neither in France nor in the rest of the world does there exist a distinctive and neutral term to describe all the offenses against women. Until we give it a name, gynophobie will not be exposed.

GYNOPHOBIE

means violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects women disproportionately.

The UN define violence towards women as follows: ““Violence against women” is understood as a violation of human rights and a form of discrimination against women and shall mean all acts of gender‐based violence that result in, or are likely to result in, physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life”

Current words such as misogyny or sexism

Do not give the possibility to assemble all the violations of women’s rights. Can one qualify excision or kidnapping of hundreds of school girls in Nigeria as sexism? Can wage discrimination be qualified as misogenous? Although these terms emanated from historical battles, they either appear too weak, too strong, too political , overused or just miles away from their initial meanings.

ARE CONSIDERED AS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN BY THE UN

  • Wage discrimination
  • All gender-based inequalities
  • Sexual assaults
  • Harassment
  • Sex trafficking
  • Educational deprivation
  • Genital mutilation and excision
  • Honor crimes and crimes related to dowry
  • Structural violence because a girl is a girl (unable to own land, undernutrition, undereducation etc.)

The idea of the word
"GYNOPHOBIA"

All these observations have lead to the desire to push forward a neutral word which will cover all offenses carried out against women.

The word “gynophobie” can support our project because it doesn’t endorse all previous battles. Alone, this term can structure the majority and cretae new battle because it has no past and no present so it will be easier to engage in a social battle in the future.

Can a word really change things?

If creating a word might sound superfluous when confronted to certain acts of violence, the idea is to first analyse the history of another word in order to understand what language is capable of accomplishing.

The discriminating racist politic of South Africa between 1948 and 1991 wash partially abolished because of the existence of one word « apartheid »that qualified degrading treatments founded on the color of the skin and a supposedly racial inferiority. People and countries came together ensuring South Africa was excluded from the international community and, little by little, imposed an embargo regardless of the realpolitik’s interest.

Today, we must do the same for the violences half of humanity suffers from. The cause of women lacks a strong enough word capable of creating a similar impact to the word apartheid and to make things change.

Thanks to the word Gynophobia, it will be possible to:

  • Structure and assemble all the numerous battles which are all scattered around regarding pay equity, physical and moral abuse, gender equity etc.
  • Name and denounce phenomenons that only concern women (excision, forced mariage, etc.)

The word gynophobie could set the necessary limits in the 21st century.

Our mission

To ensure the emergence of the word gynophobie

not only in France but worldwide, in common parlance and in dictionnaries.

Awareness campaign for the general public

The internet and social media have become the main vehicle of communicating and expresssing moral causes.

All forms of art are a major driver in denouncing acts of gynophobia and raising collective awareness

In order to deploy different means of expression and make them reachable to as many people as possible, the association develops and hosts:

An artistic online platform

www.nogynophobie.org (bientôt en ligne)

www.yolove.fr (soon online) Gatheing all films, photos, texts which deal or condemn gynophobia. The award ceremony took place in Cannes in May 2016.

An international short-film contest

based on the battle against gynophobic acts. The award ceremony will take place in Cannes, in May 2016

The awareness campaign will continue through

annual conferences

bringing together the main actors involved in the fight against gynophobia.

The release of a book

(group of writers, thinkers: Jacques Attali, Amma, Delphine Horvilleur, Felicité Herzog, Isabelle Stayer (lawyer) Marie Darrieussecq, Marriette Darrigrand (semniologist)) published by Editions Stock in May 2016

Form an observatory

of gynophobia whose mission will be to assemble everything we know about gynophobic phenomenons and provide an index to measure gynophobic acts in a professional environment and the rest of the world.

The observatory will have to main missions:

To gather all the information and surveys regarding violence against women

(figures, type of assaults, gepographic ares, jurisprudence etc.) so as to quantify this violence and show the reality of theses offenses. Art will also be another way to communicate this information through images.

Bring forward unpublished documents

on acts of gynophobia which will complement aquired knowledge by desseminating information in several ways: articles, gynophobia index, films, audiovisual, graphic and literary productions, etc.

Who are we?

Lisa Azuelos is the president of the association. Extremely involved in the fight for womens’ rights, she instigated the “bring back our girls” movement in the US and “free the nipple” in France. She made a documentary film condemning forced marriage “14 Millions de cris” in march 2014. This is when she realised there lacked a word in the french vocabulary: gynophobia. She is also a fim director (Comme t’y es belle, LOL, Une rencontre…), producer and screenwriter.
Laure Gomez-Montoya, vice-president, is a journalist, editor and consultant involved in different associatons for over 20 years (Solidarité Sida, L’Opals, les Amis de Sœur Emmanuelle…) . She decided to get involved in “Ensemble contre la gynophobie “ to carry on her battle against woman discrimination.
Johanne Tordjman, treasurer. Passionate, Johanne was involved in politics, communication with fair workers, floral arrangements...She also raised funds and promoted “Médecins aux pieds nus” before commiting herself to “Ensemble contre la gynophobie”.
Debora Kahn-Sriber, director of communications, actrice and editor. She has felt stongly concerned by the feminine cause and it was clear to her that a battle had to be lead with “Ensemble contre la gynophobie”.
